“If Men Could Menstruate” realized

In the October, 1978 issue of Ms Magazine, Gloria Steinem wrote an often quoted short piece titled, If Men Could Menstruate (please take a moment to read it if you’re unfamiliar with it).

Twenty-nine years later ….

Käthe Ivansich, a German design student, created for a thesis project a fictional brand,

On her website she states that she always saw the discontinuity between the women models in skateboard ads and women who skateboard and wished that the pink butterflies and floral patterns on women’s skateboards would “go to hell.” [That’s the best I can do at translated the German.]

So for her project/show she created the logo, t-shirts, board designs and print ads.

Menstruation Skateboards is not a real brand but an idea.  The reality of it is that this idea was created and expressed by a woman.  But is this a step forward for women or a step back?  I feel that Steinem was using her essay to point out the dangers of allowing the powerful to normalize their behaviors and stigmatize the behaviors of the weak.  Is this a case of women falling into the same trap as men or women becoming as empowered as men?

Apple bans iphone app: educational game about the dark side of the iphone

Phone Story is (or was) an iphone app which walks the player through the social costs to the production of the iphone, namely bad labor practices, unsafe working conditions and environmental damage.

The app store pulled the app due to “violations.” In an interview, the developer of the game stated:

“A lot of tech-aware people heard about the story of the Foxconn suicides or about the issue of electronic waste,” he continues. ” But with Phone Story, we wanted to connect all these aspects and present them in the larger frame of technological consumerism.”

Copy-mather needed?

We have copywriters, who hopefully are good writers, do we need copy-mathers, copy-calculators, copy-figurers?

1 original bar

increase by 200%

1 *2.00 =  add 2 bars to increase by 200%

1 original bar + 2 bars = 3 bars.

According to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development about 50% of Americans have a low math literacy level.

Sexual/Controversial

Here’s another ad from that campaign I referred to earlier.

I am underwhelmed by this story

And I shouldn’t be.  It’s exciting.

A legal fight  between two companies over their ads with both sides citing “experimental” research.

Scorecard: Kraft = Oscar Mayer & Sara Lee = Ball Park.

“Sara Lee argued a Kraft ad campaign falsely claimed it won a national taste test, when there were alleged flaws in the way those tests were conducted. An attorney for Sara Lee said taste testers weren’t given the option to put condiments on the hot dogs. When he suggested consumer should’ve been allowed to put on ketchup, the judge jokingly said that’s an area of great dispute.”

I think NPR’s report identified my nonplusness:

“When the lawsuit was first filed, back in may 2009, theFooducate blog scrutinized both brands of hot dog, ticking off the very similar ingredient list of the franks. Fooducate recommended staying away from both brands of hot dogs — perhaps choosing an organic variety, to cut down on sulfites and sulfates.

“But as a rule,” the site concluded, “buying an identifiable piece of meat and preparing it into a dinner is a preferred choice.”

That’s a good rule.  Stay away from both brands regardless which tastes better.
